Westbroek's opulent, unguarded soprano voice has begun to spread at the top, but she has tenderness and stamina...Ventre's butch, grizzled voice makes the bandit an unlikely heart-throb. If I were Minnie, I'd settle for Ashley Holland's smooth Jack Rance...It's not a perfect recording of this imperfect, improbable opera, but its pros handsomely outweigh its cons.

In one of her favourite roles, Westbroek is womanly and romantic, feisty and independent, a fully rounded portrayal of Puccini's golden girl, if only her top notes were not so raw.
