About

Performed for the first time in its original uncut version, this production of Guillaume Tell was the jewel in the crown of the 25-year history of the ‘Rossini in Wildbad’ opera festival. Rossini’s final, great, operatic masterpiece is a story of liberation, the oppressed Swiss attaining their ideal of emancipation by hounding the tyrannical Habsburgs out of their country. Although it was composed for the complex demands of the Paris Opéra, numerous dances, choruses and arias were dropped for reasons of practicality. These are restored in the present recording which also includes the stunning finale of the shorter 1831 version of the opera (CD 4 / Track 13).

Awards and reviews

August 2015

Foster-Williams's Tell is solemn and determined, if a little rough around the edges, Michael Spyres's Arnold generally fluent and lyrical, Judith Howarth's Mathilde passionate and engaged, Tara Stafford's Jemmy punchy and nicely scaled...There's sterling work from the orchestra under the skilful baton of Antonino Fogliani.

June 2015

Foster-Williams marries an appropriately sympathetic theatrical presence with vocal production that is both focused and refined. Much the same could be said of Judith Howarth's Matilde...Antonino Fogliano's conducting is very fine. Each act is astutely placed and shaped, as indeed is the entire opera.

25th March 2015

For Rossini completists, then, this set – all 4h 12mins of it – is a must, and there’s some stylish, lively conducting from Antonino Fogliani, who certainly galvanises the orchestra and chorus...The best contributions come from Judith Howarth as Mathilde and Michael Spyres as Arnold.
