Composed in 1834, Spohr’s Fourth Symphony was instantly popular upon its premiere with both critics and audiences.

On this fourth volume of the highly acclaimed cpo Spohr edition it is coupled with the Fifth Symphony written three years later.

As the motto phrase on cellos and basses opening No. 4 rises out pianissimo...you'll know that a fine conductor is in charge. Howard Griffiths ensures that the same dynamic is graded appropriately...Griffiths is as attentive to these elements as he is to the succeeding movement's structural mix of lullaby, dance and serenade in separate time signatures.
