Katherine takes up the 'Presto Recommends' baton this week and selects some favourite recordings of works by Hector Berlioz.

After Decca’s best-selling Beethoven For All campaign and Barenboim’s Olympic appearance comes a celebration of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra’s 10th anniversary in a stunning Berlioz recording from the BBC Proms.

This recording comes from WEDO’s 2009 Prom, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the West Eastern Divan Orchestra and marking a return to the roots of the orchestra’s conception in Weimar – a place where Liszt championed the works of Berlioz.

The album contains Berlioz’s revolutionary Symphonie Fantastique, alongside Liszt’s colourful Les Preludes.

These fiery pieces of music, charged with emotion, are recorded live, and performed with a thrilling, youthful energy by one of the world’s leading youth orchestras.

This recording celebrates Decca’s continued relationship with Maestro Barenboim and constitutes a follow up to Barenboim & Decca’s best-selling Beethoven For All project, as WEDO and Barenboim continue to break down political and cultural barriers and bring music to new audiences.

this one has the perceptible atmosphere of a live occasion, the young musicians of the West-Eastern Divan reacting alertly and unanimously to Barenboim's sense of the music's characters and expressive contours...The dramatic impulse throughout the symphony is secure.

In one of the most vivid accounts of this score I've ever come across, Barenboim conjures incredible brio, drama and colour from the young players of his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in this live performance recorded at the 2009 BBC Proms: the heady, manic excitement of the first two movements is brilliantly caught, as is the grotesquerie of the later ones.

The strings [in the Liszt] especially have a velvet sheen: partly the result of the hall’s acoustic, partly because it’s Barenboim conducting — a man who seems to make every work, of any period, sound luxuriantly romantic...Occasional infelicities may spring from the youngsters; but nothing shakes their commitment and passion.
