About

This is not the commonly-known two-act version of Fidelio, but the first version in three acts. It is enormously enlightening to take a deeper look at the original version of this great opera. The long dialogue scenes have been replaced by text by Walter Jens and on this recording, these are read by Martin Schab.

Awards and reviews

February 2011

from the first notes of the Leonore No. 2 Overture, Bertrand de Billy creates lively dramatic tension...Brigitte Geller is a bright-eyed Marzelline, Peter Rose a sympathetic and nicely characterised Rocco. As Florestan, Kurt Streit offers vocal clarity and resilience in his deeply affecting portrayal...The Arnold Schoenberg Choir show characteristic discipline in their delivery.

February 2011

Camilla Nylund is an exciting Leonore, and if her voice loses bloom at the top, her strength and power are still impressive. Kurt Streit brings touching vulnerability to the role of her husband, and de Billy's conducting is suitably fiery.

January 2011

The performance is excellent...De Billy gets thrilling playing from the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien...The Arnold Schoenberg Choir sings with accuracy and feeling. All Fidelio and Beethoven fans will need this.
