About
Playing on modern instruments – a stylish luxury in these days of ‘period’ ubiquity – the Collegium Instrumentale of Bruges and their founding director Patrick Peire have been acclaimed for the stylish good manners of their recordings from Telemann to the contemporary French composer Nicolas Bacri: their recording of Rossini’s Tancredi earned them a Grammy nomination, the first such for any Belgian-based classical ensemble. This third volume in their traversal of Telemann’s Overtures contains eight such works: suites (in the manner of Bach’s Orchestral Suites) of short, bright and breezy dance movements. Telemann infuses the form with a greater variety of metre and character than Bach, introducing Carillons, Italian airs, Espagnoles and vivid Turkish Janissary pieces.
