About

On 12th February, 1967, Isaac Stern visited the Montréal studios of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, where he was filmed in recital accompanied by Alexander Zakin. A highlight of the program was his performance of the Bach Chaconne from the Partita in D minor for solo violin. Also included are works by Schubert, Mozart and Brahms — all Stern specialties, flavored with his spoken introductions. 57 minutes, black & white.

July 2006

Recorded in the Montreal studios of Radio Canada, this recital from nearly four decades ago finds Stern at the peak of his powers. The centrepiece, of course, is the mighty Bach Chaconne. Prefaced by Stern's spoken introduction, it is a finely graded performance that builds inexorably in a masterly fashion, played almost entirely with eyes closed. It seems singularly apt.
