…Anton Rubinstein's Ocean is not the kind of phosphorescent eastern fantasy Rimsky-Korsakov was later to produce but rather a Mendelssohn-inspired northern sea with the occasional Lisztian rogue wave. The excellent George Hanson and his Wuppertalians deal... soulfully and flexibly with the sea-swells and the comfortable tunes that bob along on top... Karl Müller-Berghaus's arrangement of the First Russian Serenade provides a dash of native Slavic soul after the official fun and games of the Triumphal Overture.
