The Irish mezzo Patricia Bardon was born in Dubliln in 1964 and studied with Veronica Dunne in her home city, going on to be the youngest-ever prize-winner at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition (she took second place in the inaugural contest, which also propelled Finnish soprano Karita Mattila to international stardom). Bardon appears regularly with English National Opera (where her roles have included such diverse assignments as Arsace in Handel’s Partenope, Maura in Vaughan Williams’s Riders to the Sea, and Mary Magdalene in John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary) and Covent Garden as well as further afield; her discography includes Erda in Robert Lepage’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle from the Metropolitan Opera, Mendelssohn’s Elijah under Richard Hickox and opposite Bryn Terfel, and the title-role in Bizet’s Carmen on Chandos’s Opera in English series.
