A 'truly magical' account of Brahms's German Requiem from Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion on Harmonia Mundi proved our most popular title of October, after being praised by Gramophone for its 'moment-to-moment intensity of concentration' and by our own David Smith for its 'synthesis of new and old and everything in between' in terms of performance practice.

The French ensemble's interpretation of JS Bach's Mass in B minor (released back in April) made a reappearance at No. 5 in the chart after being named as Recording of the Year at the Gramophone Awards at the beginning of October.

There was also a resurgence of interest in Edward Gardner's recording of Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer (with Gerald Finley in the title-role and Lise Davidsen as Senta) on Decca, and Brahms's Piano Quartets Nos. 2 and 3 from Krystian Zimerman & friends on Deutsche Grammophon, which won the Opera and Chamber categories respectively.
