New Release Round-up, New Release Round-Up - 20th May 2022

Today's new releases include Mendelssohn, Schubert and Mozart from Riccardo Chailly and the Filarmonica della Scala, Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin (in a new English translation by Jeremy Sams) from Nicky Spence & Christopher Glynn, a Parisian recital from flautist Ana de la Vega and pianist Paul Rivinius, and a newly revised version of John Williams's 1994 Cello Concerto from its dedicatee Yo-Yo Ma and New York Philharmonic Orchestra (with the composer conducting).

Filarmonica della Scala, Riccardo Chailly

Recorded in Dolby Atmos at La Scala, Chailly's celebration of his homeland as muse centres on Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony (given here in the revised 1834 version), and also features Schubert’s two Overtures in the Italian Style, plus the overtures to three early Mozart operas which were premiered in Milan: Mitridate, Re di Ponto, Ascanio in Alba, and Lucio Silla.

This celebration of the forty-year friendship between cellist and composer features Highwood's Ghost (written to mark the Leonard Bernstein centenary in 2018) and a new revision of the Cello Concerto which Williams composed for Ma in 1994. The programme also includes new arrangements for cello and orchestra of the main theme from Schindler's List, 'With Malice Toward None' (from Lincoln), and 'A Prayer for Peace' (from Munich).

Nicky Spence (tenor), Christopher Glynn (piano)

Following recordings of Winter Journey with Roderick Williams and Swan Song with Sir John Tomlinson, Glynn continues his Schubert in English series with Scottish tenor Nicky Spence, who's established a fine reputation for singing works in translation through his long-term relationship with English National Opera (including a powerful Siegmund in The Valkyrie last year). As on previous instalments, the translation is by writer and director Jeremy Sams, whose 'Winter Journey' was praised as 'lucid and poetic' by The Sunday Times.
