The 40-year friendship between two musical titans, John Williams & Yo-Yo Ma, reaches a new peak with 'A Gathering of Friends.' The incredible warmth & brilliance of composer/conductor John Williams is felt throughout this album of both his concert music (a newly revised 'Cello Concerto') and his legendary film music, including a powerful new arrangement of the 'Theme' from 'Schindler's List,' brought to life by Yo-Yo Ma and the world-renowned New York Philharmonic.

August 2022
It’s a treat to hear Ma lend his still-flawless technique to this selection. His light and transparent tone floats serenely above the Concerto’s dense harmonic landscape, and the arrangements of film themes are captivating, too – though he doesn’t quite achieve the gravitas of Itzhak Perlman’s original Schindler’s List recording.

[The Cello Concerto is] a magnificently dramatic work that is given a virtuosic reading by Ma, not least in the devilishly fiendish first-movement cadenza. Ma also offers a moving account of Three Pieces from Schindler's List (originally for violin but heard here in the composer-sanctioned cello arrangement), alongside music from two more Steven Spielberg films, Munich and Lincoln. Finally there is the premiere audio recording of the wonderfully atmospheric Highwood's Ghost, depicting the supposed haunting of one of the buildings on the Tanglewood campus.
