New Release Round-up, New Release Round-up - 1st September 2017

New Releases - 1st September 2017Cellist Steven Isserlis plays and directs Haydn concertos, violinist Alina Ibragimova continues her Mozart sonata cycle, Martha Argerich presents her latest selection from last year's Lugano festival and Vladimir Ashkenazy conducts Rachmaninov's First Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra in this week's selections.

Steven Isserlis (cello/director), Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen

If the two Haydn concertos are the most accomplished contributions to the cello’s burgeoning repertoire written in the eighteenth century, the CPE Bach coupling is scarcely less fine. Two charmingly rococo encores complete this latest essential release from Steven Isserlis.

Philharmonia Orchestra, Vladimir Ashkenazy

With their conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Philharmonia return to disc with a live performance of Rachmaninov’s volcanic Symphony No.1. This is the first release in a new series of Rachmaninov’s symphonies, conducted by Ashkenazy in live performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Alina Ibragimova (violin), Cédric Tiberghien (piano)

This is a series which continues to redefine the standards by which these works should be performed. As before, the music spans most of Mozart’s life, from 1763 - when he was just seven years old - to 1782, and (another) unfinished present written for his new wife Constanze.

Available Formats: 2 CDs, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Pianists include: Martha Argerich, Nicholas Angelich, Stephen Kovacevich, Sergey Babayan

Martha Argerich's annual festival at Lugano is well-established as one of the world’s most important music festivals. This 3-CD set of highlights from the 2016 festival includes soloists such as Nicholas Angelich, Stephen Kovacevich, and Renaud Capuçon. Argerich herself features on many of the performances, including Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and the Piano Concerto in G major.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

The Sixteen, Harry Christophers

The Sixteen continues its exploration of Palestrina’s great art with the eagerly anticipated seventh album in the series which includes the Missa Ave Regina caelorum. This volume focuses on some of the pivotal women in Christian history - Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, St Barbara and Susannah.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Tasmin Little (violin), BBC Symphony Orchestra, Edward Gardner

Tasmin Little joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner in intensely expressive interpretations of the concertos by the Polish composers Karłowicz and Szymanowski. All were written within the space of a generation (1902, 1916, and 1933), and yet they belong to quite different worlds.

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC
