Box Set Selections, Boxed Set Selections - June 2017

June boxed set round-upThis month's heavyweight highlights include birthday tributes to Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) and Gundula Janowitz (b. 1937) and sets commemorating the anniversaries of the deaths of Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) and André Cluytens (1905-1967). Special mention, too, for Fugue State Films's enterprising (and beautifully packaged) survey of the life and works of Max Reger on six DVDs.

Karl Böhm; Staatskapelle Dresden, Wiener Philharmoniker

This 19-CD collection documents the Austrian conductor's career from 1935 to 1949, most notably with the Staatskapelle Dresden; repertoire includes substantial highlights from Wagner and Strauss operas, symphonies by Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven, and a previously unreleased Vienna recording of Mozart's Serenata notturna.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Released to commemorate what would have been the 100th birthday of the great Romanian pianist on April 1st, these 12 CDs include his legendary recording of the Schumann Piano Concerto with Herbert von Karajan, concertos by Bartók, Chopin, Grieg, Liszt and Mozart, and solo works by Brahms, Busoni, Enescu, Ravel, Scarlatti and Lipatti himself.

Available Formats: 12 CDs, MP3, FLAC

Recorded live in Moscow between 1949 and 1963, this 10-CD set includes several performances which are new to CD (such as the two-movement version of the Piano Sonata No. 6 D566 and the unfinished Sonata No. 15 D840) and a cameo from Benjamin Britten, who joins Richter for the Variations in A flat D813.

Available Formats: 10 CDs, MP3, FLAC

Gundula Janowitz

Released in anticipation of the Austrian lyric soprano's 80th birthday on 2nd August, this 14-CD original jacket collection features excerpts from her most celebrated operatic roles (such as Mozart and Strauss's Countesses, Elsa, Elisabeth and Sieglinde), highlights from Messiah, The Creation and The Seasons, two recordings of the Four Last Songs, and a generous selection of Schubert lieder.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Heinrich Schiff

Celebrating Schiff's double legacy as cellist and conductor, highlights here include his recording of the Dvořák Concerto under Previn and the Brahms Double Concerto under Sawallisch with Frank Peter Zimmermann, as well as his Mahler 1 and Bruckner 4 and two recordings of the Lutosławski Cello Concerto - one as soloist (under the baton of the composer), the other as conductor (with Christian Poltéra).
