About

Anne Schwanewilms is considered one the greatest dramatic sopranos of our time, and her performances in operas by Richard Strauss, Wagner and Mozart have earned her praise from critics and public alike around the world. She is also equally distinguished in the recital hall and her first CD for ONYX 'Das Himmlischer Leben' (Liszt & Mahler) was universally praised. For her second ONYX disc, Mahler again features - the searing and bleak emotions of 'Kindertotenlieder', the 'Rückert Lieder' cycle and three 'Wunderhorn' songs. These are prefaced by the sumptuously romantic early Op. 2 set of four songs by Schoenberg.

Awards and reviews

November 2015

Schwanewilms holds Schoenberg's melody, in his early Op. 2 songs, like the finest silken thread. Her faultless legato realises to perfection the echoes of inner rhyme and assonance within the poetry…both Schwanewilms and Malcolm Martineau, in his deft, sentient piano playing, are finely tuned to the music's nerve system.

August 2015

[Schwanewilms's voice], unusually 'instrumental' in quality, almost hollow-sounding in its glass-like clarity at the top…brings a strangely wraith-like character to the Kindertotenlieder

26th July 2015

Malcolm Martineau provides piano accompaniment of a variety and intimacy that suits the songs perfectly, perhaps more so than the usual orchestral version. Schwanewilms has lovely, floated high notes. She interprets with perception, and sings with heartbreaking purity.
