Playing to the viola’s dark strengths, Amanda Harberg’s ELEGY is an arrestingly dramatic memorial whose slow pulsations appear to stop time beneath the solo viola’s declamatory chant. ELEGY may be played with either viola or cello as soloist, with orchestra or quartet or piano as the accompanying ensemble, or by orchestra alone.
