Perpetuum Mobile is a fun, exciting and virtuosic tour-de-force for the advanced bassist. The music is marked Velocissimamente and the bassist plays for 170 bars without a break, utilising the entire range of the instrument, alongside a colourful and inventive accompaniment which adds support and rhythmic drive. It was originally published as part of Simandl’s ground-breaking Method [Advanced Course for the Double-Bass], first published in Germany in 1903 by C.F.Schmidt (Heilbronn), which consists of 50 recital works divided into nine volumes. Not one for the faint-hearted, but Perpetuum Mobile would be a fantastic virtuoso final piece in a recital. The edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.
