About
There is one commonality between the 3 short piano pieces in this collection: Narrative. The 3 pieces presented here aim to represent 3 different forms of narrative. The pieces can be played either as 3 movements together making a whole work or individually as discrete items in a programme of other works. The main thing to remember about each (which should inform the performance) is:
Suo G?n: An arrangement of the Welsh traditional melody written as a mother tends to her baby whilst worrying about the future of the child.
Iter Sine Caritate: (or ?A Loveless Journey?) tells the story of a person who has fallen in love with someone they have newly met, only to discover that the person they have feelings for is not available and was never so.
Wernbwll: The Wernbwll colliery was situated in the village of Penclawdd on the North Gower coast. On Thursday November 28th 1928 there was an explosion in the shafts which killed a number of men including my great-grandfather Edwin Harry and his son (my great uncle) Thomas Harry. This piece imagines the aftermath (as observed by my grandmother) from the family home window.
The 3 pieces were recorded by pianist Annabel Thwaite on the album: Fusions Vol.1: instrumental Music by Edward-Rhys Harry.
The recording is available on all streaming platforms and can be ordered either online or through recorded music retailers, including WillowHayne Records.
Volume 1 of '3 Scenes for piano' is available here.
