Carl Roskott’s Concerto for Trumpet (for Trumpet in C) was commissioned by Bob Helmacy in 1991, in order that there might be a full-length concerto representing the many voices of the trumpet as they occur in orchestral music but where the instrument would always be heard. Carl Roskott more than fulfilled this request and purposefully left orchestral trumpets out of the score to allow for the solo trumpet sound to flourish. He produced a deeply moving piece, full of fire and lyricism. Ranging from the robust to the sublime, the concerto integrates the motor-rhythmic drive of the baroque composer, the steely angularity of Stravinsky and the quiet beauty of Mahler-esque transcendentalism. It was written for and premiered by Paul Randall at Eastern Music Festival in 1993, with Robert Helmacy Conducting. Paul Neebe later recorded it with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra on Albany Records (Troy805) in 2005. Rob Deemer has made the arrangement for trumpet and piano.
