The number of Antonio Vivaldi's oboe concertos cannot be precisely determined. Although the present F major Concerto was formerly considered a certain work by Vivaldi (hence the old RV number 458), doubts as to Vivaldi's authorship have increased (unlike the C major Concerto RV 446 MR 2294). These cannot be resolved by the existence of two sources from the extensive collection in Lund (Sweden). The Adagio middle movement, which has been handed down differently in the two sources, deserves special attention. In the first edition for oboe and piano, the unadorned version is printed first, then publisher Sandro Caldini offers the Adagio in the performance-practically interesting version with the embellishments typical of the time.
