The pre-war songs Roses, Speak to Me, My Love, A Phantom, The Other One, Loneliness as well as those of the forties It's Night, Parting, The Shadow Line form a distinct, though unintended thematic cycle. These lyric love poems involve dreams and memories personified in poetic symbolism. An atmosphere of sadness prevails, the beloved person is away, appearing as a phantom. Kiejstut Bacewicz described the cycle as follows: ''Grażyna's songs are decidedly intimate in nature, as regards both the expressive settings of the texts and the compositional principles adopted. They are fine musical poems, arranged in an ingenious and elaborate way duets for voice and piano (...). An atmosphere of intense concentration prevails. An emotional content of the songs is very sublime. There's a refined play of symbols involved (...).''
