Broadening the Repertoire, The Oxford Book of Organ Music by Women Composers

organmusicCreated by Anne Marsden Thomas and Ghislaine Reece-Trapp, they describe in the preface how The Oxford Book of Organ Music by Women Composers is "...a tribute to the thousands of women across six centuries who have overcome social pressures, limited educational opportunities, exclusion from professional societies, prejudice and discouragement, as well as childbirth and domestic pressure, to compose music."

The editors were faced with many obstacles when embarking on this project; countless women went unpublished, or had their works published under a pseudonym, under their husband's name, or using only their initials. The task of finding suitable sources for their music was therefore very difficult. In addition to this, the Organ was traditionally viewed as a 'male instrument', indecent for women to play, and even described as being a risk to their health and reproductive organs. In many instances where women did compose Organ works, they restricted their writing style to meet the societal expectations of the time. It was therefore necessary to also include organ transcriptions in this collection, increasing the content of this album considerably.

That is to say, this collection is colossal in its compilation of a range of periods and styles, exploring the full breadth of organ music by women composers. For players of all capabilities, each piece in the book provides an approximate grade (to align with the ABRSM grading system), making it a new staple of the organ repertoire.

The Oxford Book of Organ Music by Women Composers presents a comprehensive survey of historical organ pieces by women composers alongside six newly commissioned works. The music is stylistically varied and encompasses secular and sacred repertoire from a range of periods. In addition to original organ repertoire, the collection also contains several organ transcriptions in new arrangements for the instrument.
