Recommended Sheet Music, Max Reger Complete Organ Works

March 19th, 2023 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Max Reger. A composer who achieved lasting fame primarily through his organ works, Reger also made significant achievements in the areas of chamber music, lieder, choral, and orchestral works. By transferring older genres, like the prelude and fugue, into his late Romantic tonal language, he appealed musically to his contemporaries whilst also exploiting the full potential of the large, Romantic organs.

Max Reger’s Complete Organ Works is now available as a seven-volume slip case edition. Based on the volumes of the Reger Complete Edition edited by Hans Klotz, this edition includes a comprehensive preface by Hans Haselböck commenting on the background of each work. Haselböck places the organ compositions in relation to Reger’s complete œuvre and to the instruments at Reger’s disposal, providing detailed suggestions for a stylistically authentic interpretation. A clearly organized chronological table of Reger’s organ works offers important orientation aids for everyone wishing to place this important complex of works in its biographical-historical context. All texts in the volumes are printed in both German and English.

Die Nonnen (The Nuns) can be regarded as a companion piece to Reger’s monumental 100th Psalm. While the latter is a large-scale work climaxing in a Lutheran chorale, Die Nonnen is a setting of a poem by Martin Boelitz, which is infused with the spirit of monastic devotion.

This edition contains a selection of Reger's sacred a cappella choral works. Their scoring, level of difficulty and length make them ideal for choirs who are wary of tackling the large-scale motets. The pieces are arranged in chronological order, culminating in the well-known cycle of Acht geistliche Gesänge op. 138.

It is little known that alongside his three great sonatas for clarinet and piano, Reger also wrote two charming miniatures for the same instrumentation. At the same time, it was the composer’s express desire to reach a wider public with smaller works such as these that were to be published in music journals. The effervescent Tarantella and the Albumblatt that is full of nuances provide clarinettists and pianists with an easy introduction to Max Reger’s magical world of sound.
