This performance from Hamburg in 1970 has classic status, several of the singers being major Wagnerians otherwise not to be seen onstage. The whole production exudes nobility, despite fairly brief cuts in each Act.
2010
Costume are traditional, with minimal sets never intruding...The cast is exceptionally fine, with no weak link...A classic film version, in which the conductor Leopold Ludwig is masterly at building up the great 'gulp' moments in each Act.
