College jazz concerts have long been a regular occurrence, but in 1953 they were a rarity. It was the Dave Brubeck Quartet that pioneered performing jazz at universities and the show featured here mark their first on record. Oberlin with its famous conservatory, was an appropriate setting and the quartet came up with a program of five great jazz standards in long and often surprisingly free performances that found Dave and Paul Desmond at the top of their game.
Presented here are the complete original LPs ‘Jazz at Oberlin (Fantasy 311) and ‘Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond at ‘Wilshire-Ebell’ (Fantasy 3249) both consisting of live performances taped in 1953. This edition of the Oberlin concert presents Desmond’s legendary solo on ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ in its complete form for the first time ever on CD.
