Cool & West Coast
Cool jazz is a broad style of jazz music that developed following the Second World War, characterised by slower tempos and relaxed tone, as opposed to the more fast and complex sounds of bebop. The term 'cool jazz' overlaps between different approaches to jazz music; either bebop players who wanted to soften their sound a bit, players who ignored bebop altogether in favour of late-era swing music, or players in the California scene that gave way to the 'West Coast' sound. Prominent cool jazz players included Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Giuffre, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, and with his 'Birth of the Cool' album, Miles Davis.
