Richie Beirach (1947-2026)

The innovative American jazz pianist and composer, whose modernist style secured his reputation as a leading ECM artist, has died at the age of 78.

Born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, Richard Alan Beirach began studying piano at the age of five. He received a strong grounding in classical music from an early age, but entering into his teenage years, he became increasingly drawn to jazz and began absorbing the language of bebop alongside the harmonic voices of twentieth century classical composers. By the late 1960s he was active on the New York scene, establishing himself as a pianist of striking originality and intellectual depth.

Beirach came to wider prominence in the early 1970s, particularly through his association with ECM Records, with whom he recorded a series of influential albums including Eon, Leaving, and Hubris. His playing was marked by a fluid, highly chromatic harmonic approach and a lyrical sense of structure, allowing improvisation to naturally unfold. He became a key figure in modern jazz piano, admired for his ability to fuse classical discipline with spontaneous expression.

A highly sought-after collaborator, Beirach worked with many leading musicians of his generation and beyond. His long-standing partnership with saxophonist Dave Liebman proved especially significant, yielding numerous recordings and performances that explored the outer edges of post-bop and modal jazz. He also performed and recorded with artists including Stan Getz, Chet Baker, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, and George Garzone, contributing his distinctive voice to a wide range of musical projects.

Alongside his performing and recording career, Beirach was deeply committed to education. In 2000 he moved to Germany to take up a professorship in jazz piano at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. Over the course of the following fifteen years he became a respected and influential teacher, mentoring a generation of European jazz musicians. Even after retiring from his academic post, he continued to perform and compose, remaining creatively active well into his later years.

In the final years of his life, Beirach experienced ongoing health problems, spending extended periods in care in Germany. He died on 26th January 2026, following complications from a long illness. He is survived by his former spouse and longtime musical collaborator, the pianist LeeAnn Ledgerwood.
