Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, often referred to as "Emahoy," was an Ethiopian nun, composer, and pianist known for her unique musical style blending Ethiopian, European, and Middle Eastern influences. She was born on December 12, 1923, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Emahoy's musical journey began when she was sent to boarding school in Switzerland at a young age, where she learned to play the piano. She continued her musical education in Cairo, Egypt, and later studied in Europe before returning to her country of origin.

Throughout her life, she faced various challenges, including political unrest and personal struggles, which greatly influenced her music. She spent several years in Jerusalem, where she became a nun in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Despite her religious vocation, she continued to compose and perform inspirational music.

Primarily known as a pianist and composer, Emahoy's compositions are characterized by their soulful melodies, haunting harmonies and intricate rhythms. While she may not sing on all of her albums, her music is deeply expressive and emotive, often conveying a sense of saintly introspection through her piano playing. For her unique blend of styles, she often drew inspiration from her native folk music and church chants, as well as classical and jazz influences. This devout music often reflects her deep spirituality and contemplative nature, showcasing her unique musical voice influenced by Ethiopian, European and Middle Eastern traditions.

Despite her vast talent and contributions to Ethiopian music, Emahoy remained relatively unknown outside of her homeland for much of her life. However, in recent years, her music has gained international recognition, thanks in part to the efforts of music enthusiasts and record labels dedicated to preserving and promoting her work. Since her death last year at the age of 99, her music continues to inspire audiences around the world with its beauty, depth, and cultural richness — with her new album, Souvenirs, further proving this notion.
