The latest jazz releases include new ECM albums from Sebastian Rochford and Mette Henriette, Enrico Pieranunzi playing the music of John Lewis, and Wayne Shorter at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Sebastian Rochford, Kit Downes

Drummer Sebastian Rochford enlists pianist Kit Downes to realise a collection of intimate pieces in tribute to his father, poet Gerard Rochford.

Mette Henriette

Another fresh ECM release this week is saxophonist Mette Henriette's Drifting, her sophomore recording with the label filled with idiosyncratic, chamber-influenced trio pieces.

Enrico Pieranunzi Trio & Orchestra

Enrico Pieranunzi is joined by Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana to produce an album of the music of John Lewis, the American pianist, composer and arranger who was perhaps best known as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet alongside Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Connie Kay.

Lester Young & Harry "Sweets" Edison

An Essential Jazz Classics reissue of this 1957 album by Lester Young and Harry "Sweets" Edison, also featuring Osar Peterson, this includes the whole original album as well as 5 bonus tracks and an 8-page booklet with liner notes and rare photographs.

This reissue from BBE Music comes from a 1978 private press album by saxophonist Hideyasu Terakawa, originally released in just 100 copies and marking its first ever reissue. Introducing features no original compositions, rather interpretations of tunes by American composers like Wayne Shorter, Milt Jackson and Jimmy Heath.

Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese & Esperanza Spalding

Originally recorded in 2017 at the Detroit Jazz Festival, this record sees the esteemed Wayne Shorter in a quartet featuring Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese & Esperanza Spalding, all of them great leaders in their own right, including tribute to the late Geri Allen with interpretations of some of her pieces.

Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival first released on CD back in September 2022, and releases on vinyl this week.
