Quite an early highlight for new jazz in 2023, Alive at the Village Vanguard sees two highly acclaimed artists, pianist/composer Fred Hersch and vocalist/bassist/songwriter Esperanza Spalding, playing at the similarly revered Village Vanguard venue as a duo. With only a loosely-defined set of repertoire prepared for the show, Hersch and Spalding leave the rest up to the spirit of improvisation.

The latest in Blue Note's Tone Poet vinyl series is Oh! by ScoLoHoFo, the supergroup of guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Al Foster. Originally conceived as a band in 1999 from the quartet's longstanding comradery, this 2002 album features a selection of originals by each of the group.
