The latest jazz new releases include Chihiro Yamanaka's new piano trio album on Blue Note, two reissues of Miles Davis classics on vinyl via Pan Am and Jazz Wax, and Raynald Colom's A Million Dreams on CD and vinyl from Whirlwind Recordings.

Raynald Colom

Trumpeter Raynald Colom's latest album, A Million Dreams, releases on physical formats this week via Whirlwind Recordings. Though French-born, Colom's musical background is mostly in flamenco, but finds his inspiration across many styles of music and other mediums. Its opening track, 'Whholeness', takes cues from Scriabin's 'colour concept', and is inspired by the sunrise in his current home of Barcelona. Other takes include a stirring version of 'The Peacocks', and 'When Logan Meets Miro' which sees the meeting of two of Colom's close musical partners - Logan Richardson and Joan Mir.

Miles Davis All-Stars

Pan Am Records present a reissue of Miles Davis' Solar, originally released on Prestige as Walkin', the product of two recording sessions and the second of which led to the recording of Miles' classic composition 'Solar'. However, despite the love for this tune, Miles would never record it a second time, with this reissue giving it more of its deserving spotlight alongside the rest of the excellent session.

Miles Davis

Another Miles reissue releases this week, the classic Birth of the Cool originally recorded with his nonet group which featured, among others, Gerry Mulligan, Max Roach, and J.J. Johnson across its three recording sessions between 1949 and 1950. A controversial release but ultimately one that's more stood the test of time, Birth of the Cool is a showcase of innovative arrangements and unorthodox compositions that cemented the sound that became known as 'cool jazz'.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Releasing on vinyl this week is drummer Tommy Crane's We're All Improvisers Now, his debut solo recording, which despite the musician's instrument of choice has more in common with new age and ambient music than it does straight-up jazz. And quite fittingly Crane describes the project as "one big experiment", a sound which he likely won't revisit, and the fleeting We're All Improvisers Now serves as an enthusiastic indulgence of Crane's more ambient sensibilities, featuring guest spots from saxophonists Logan Richardson and Charlotte Greve, guitarist Simon Angell and bassist Jordan Brooks.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

We're All Improvisers Now released earlier this year on CD.
