The latest crop of jazz releases include saxophonist Charles Lloyd's final entry in his 'Trio of Trios' series, this time featuring guitarist Julian Lage and percussionist Zakir Hussain on the more world music-inspired Sacred Thread, while the WDR Big Band Cologne's live recording of the Charlie Parker centenary releases on Jazzline as Birth of a Bird. There's a new entry into the Jazz Is Dead series with Chicano-jazz legend Garrett Saracho, and Barely Breaking Even add to their ongoing J-Jazz series with Yasuhiro Kohno's 1985 album Song of Island.

WDR Big Band Cologne, with long-time conductor Michael Abene and featuring alto saxophonists Johan Hörlén and Luigi Grasso, celebrate the Charlie Parker centenary with a special live performance at the Philharmonic Hall in Cologne. Bird's bebop tunes re-contextualised for big band include the classic 'Yardbird Suite', 'Chi-Chi' and 'My Little Suede Shoes'.

Charles Lloyd

Yusef Lateef

A reissue on Essential Jazz Classics, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef's Eastern Sounds was originally released in 1961, and continues Lateef's exploration into fusing hard bop with Middle Eastern traditional music - bassist Ernie Farrow even takes up the Afghan 'Rubab' instrument, while Lateef plays the (admittedly not Middle Eastern) Chinese globular flute, the xun.
