Highlights from this week's crop of jazz releases include a new quartet recording from Bill Frisell on Blue Note, an album of ballads from David Liebman, and another archival rarity from Barely Breaking Even by the band Wütrio.
On Bill Frisell's third full-length album for Blue Note, the guitarist and composer brings on board three long-time collaborators - Greg Tardy (sax, clarinet and bass clarinet), Johnathan Blake (drums) and Gerald Clayton (piano) - to form a new quartet group on Four, a record tackling loss, renewal, and friendship.

Dave Liebman's latest album - recorded with guitarist Ben Monder and bassist John Hébert - is a rare record from the saxophonist featuring only ballads, after over 500 recordings he's contributed to. Included are a mixture of originals and standards, including 'Blue In Green', 'Stella By Starlight' and 'Bye Bye Blackbird'.

Reissued on Verve's By Request series, Roy Brooks' 1964 album enjoys an audiophile-grade re-release; originally recorded for record producer Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz imprint with Brooks alongside his bandmates from the Horace Silver Quintet, Beat sees Brooks injecting a soul-jazz flair into hard bop.

American pianist and nu jazz pioneer Robert Glasper's 2012 classic Black Radio enjoys a 10th anniversary deluxe reissue this week, including the original album with 3 bonus tracks, as well as a remix EP titled Black Radio Recovered.

Originally sourced from two sessions made by Davis to fulfil his final contractual obligations to Prestige Records, 2nd Sessions 1956 features the material that would go on to appear on the albums Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin' with his quintet featuring John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Often recorded in just one take, these sessions are about as raw as you can get for '50s Miles.
