New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 20th October 2022

Max Roach - We Insist

This week's new jazz releases include Corrie Dick's Swells, an album of jazz-rock trios on Ubtunu Music, as well as jazz bassist Dieter Ilg performing Ravel on ACT Music and saxophonist Mark Turner's Return From the Stars releasing on vinyl from ECM.

Corrie Dick

Drummer Corrie Dick, perhaps best known for his work as the drummer from British jazz quartet Dinosaur, describes his latest album Swells as "a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core". Featuring himself alongside guitarist Rob Luft and bassist Tom McCredie, Swells certainly manages the fusion with hard-hitting tracks, embracing what Dick calls the "iPod shuffle generation" with its blending of disparate musical elements.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Dieter Ilg

German bass player Dieter Ilg is no stranger to classical composer projects. Having already covered the works of Verdi, Wagner, Beethoven and Bach, on his aptly-titled latest album he turns his attention to Ravel, reinterpreting the likes of 'Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte', 'Le Jardin Féerique' and others with the help of pianist Rainer Böhm and drummer Patrice Héral.

Available Format: CD

Michael Wollny Trio

Michael Wollny describes songs like 'ghosts', and according to him these songs haunt him particularly regularly. Ranging from his own compositions to Franz Schubert and Nick Cave, Ghosts offers a real insight into the pianist's musical mind.

Available Format: CD

Mark Turner

Originally releasing earlier this year, saxophonist Mark Turner's Return From the Stars (titled after the sci-fi novel by Stanisłav Lem) is his first quartet record since 2014's Lathe of Heaven, and features free-flowing compositions as he's accompanied by trumpeter Jason Palmer, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jonathan Pinson.

Available Formats: 2 Vinyl Records, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Max Roach's radical We Insist!, a key artistic statement of the time's Civil Rights Movement, re-releases on vinyl via Candid this week. A suite that focusses on the struggles of Black Americans, the record itself features contributions from Abbey Lincoln, who performs on every track alongside Roach, as well as Coleman Hawkins and Booker Little.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

We Insist! also released on CD earlier this year.
