For this week's latest jazz releases, we've new sounds from psychedelic space-jazzers The Comet Is Coming, the latest instalment in Charles Lloyd's 'trio of trios' project, and the follow-up to pianist Connie Han's Iron Starlet, and many others.

Charles Lloyd, Gerald Clayton, Anthony Wilson

The second of three trio albums released by Charles Lloyd this year, Ocean, sees him teaming up with long-time collaborators Anthony Wilson (guitar) and Gerald Clayton (piano). With a drum-less trio, Ocean makes for an intimate set of tunes, arranged in four roughly ten-minute cuts written by Lloyd.

Wolfert Brederode, Matangi Quartet & Joost Lijbaart

Written as a suite for piano, string quartet and percussion to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I in 2018, Ruins and Remains captures wider sentiments of grief, loss and new beginnings. Here Brederode performs with jazz percussionist and drummer Joost Lijbaart, as well as the versatile Matangi string quartet.

Alina Bzhezhinska

London-based harpist Alina Bzhezhinska and her HipHarp Collective follow up their debut album Inspiration with Reflections, now finding her home on Barely Breaking Even (BBE) Music. Alina's music incorporates a huge number of her influences, with her harp sounds layered with effects and electronic sounds, as well as drawing from funk and trip-hop.

Psychedelic jazz warriors The Comet Is Coming return for their second full-length album since 2019's Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery, leaning more into dancehall-influenced rhythms and spacious electronic sounds this time around.

Chick Corea

The latest album in the Montreux Years series, which collects performances from musicians over multiple visits to the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, focusses on Chick Corea, seen here with his quartet, 'New Trio', Freedom Band, Akoustic Band and Elektric Band.

Horace Silver

Live New York, Revisited is comprised of recordings by Horace Silver playing at the Half Note and Cork & Bib jazz clubs in New York in the mid-60s, playing classics like 'Song For My Father' and 'Señor Blues' with bandmates Carmell Jones (trumpet) and Teddy Smith (bass) at the Half Note and Woody Shaw (trumpet) and Larry Ridley (bass) at the Cork & Bib, while Joe Henderson and Roger Humphries fill in on tenor sax and drums respectively on both dates.

Live at Fabrik is a previously unreleased recording by soul-jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris, playing with his quartet of guitarist Darryl Thompson, bassist Ray Peterson and drummer Norman Fearrington at Hamburg's cultural heart.

Connie Han

Pianist and Steinway artist Connie Han follows up her 2020 album Iron Starlet with another Mack Avenue record Secrets of Inanna; while Iron Starlet leant more into hard bop pianists of the past, this time around Han draws more from spiritual sounds and modern jazz.
