New release picks for this week in jazz include bebop standards from prolific guitarist Pasquale Grasso, a new piano trio album from Alan Broadbent, and a live session of tracks from Kurt Ellig's SuperBlue, as well as vinyl editions of Brad Mehldau's Jacob's Ladder and Ivo Neame's Glimpses of Truth.

Alan Broadbent Trio

On the New Zealand jazzman Alan Broadbent's third album on Savant, the Grammy-nominated arranger and accompanist pens nine original tunes alongside his triomates Harvie S and Billy Mintz.

This release features takes from vocalist Kurt Elling's funky SuperBlue, recorded during a live session at The Pool, London, alongside guitarist Charlie Hunter and a small live band.

Pasquale Grasso

You may already know guitarist Pasquale Grasso from the band of Samara Joy's self-titled debut last year, but he's already released a number of instrumental bebop guitar recordings; Be-Bop! is his sixth album for Masterworks, a tribute to bebop legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

Bill Heid

Another new release on Savant, this time from Pittsburgh-based Hammond organist Bill Heid, whose album of originals (save the closing track 'Hurt So Bad') channels great players of the instrument's past, citing Don Patterson and Jimmy Smith as key influences for the record.

Ivo Neame

Originally releasing on the tail-end of last year, pianist Ivo Neame's Glimpses of Truth is now available to own on vinyl; for this recent album Neame recorded his big band compositions for the first time, all completed remotely (including mixing and mastering it himself) over the pandemic period.
