This week's new jazz releases include the first solo album in over two decades from Gil-Scott Heron collaborator Brian Jackson, Parisian musician Sly Johnson's soul and hip-hop-infused 55.4, Danish drummer Kresten Osgood playing the organ, and new releases from Double Moon Records.

Brian Jackson

New on BBE (Barely Breaking Even) is the latest album from American jazz multi-instrumentalist and singer Brian Jackson, perhaps best known for his work with Gil-Scott Heron in the 1970s. This Is Brian Jackson is a culmination of his many decades creating music, reflecting his tastes and expertise in jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop, as well as marking his first solo album in over 20 years.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Sly Johnson

Another new issue from BBE, this time from Parisian soul, hip-hop and jazz musician Sylvère Johnson, also known as Sly Johnson. Recorded during the first COVID lockdowns back in March to May 2020, his latest album is a blend of soul and hip-hop, citing Prince and D'Angelo as key influences.

Denmark's Kresten Osgood is more known as one of the country's finest jazz drummers, having played for organists like Dr. Lonnie Smith, Billy Preston and Sam Yahel; but for his latest album Osgood's decided to take up the organ himself, including material from former bandmate Lonnie Smith and Danish rock musician Sebastian.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

The multinational ensemble Fussyduck's members collaborate between Switzerland, France and England, combining the classic piano trio format with violin, alto sax and trombone, on their debut album Maybe That's All We Get - originally recorded in January 2020 after winning the BeJazz Transnational Prize in Bern, Switzerland.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

One of the latest releases from Double Moon Records' Jazz Thing Next Generation series comes from pianist Jonas Timm, a quintet recording inspired by the sounds and grooves of Latin American music.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Another new Jazz Thing Next Generation release is Nachtblau ('Night Blue') from drummer Dominik Hoyer and his band, a collection of mostly ballads broken up by more rhythmical up-tempo pieces.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Mankunku Quartet

A reissue from Mr. Bongo of the Mankunku Quartet's 1968 album, Yakhal Inkomo, originally released only on South African label World Record Co.. This excellent, much sough-after (and Gilles Peterson-recommended) piece of South African jazz is now available with an Abbey Road remaster from the original master tapes.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Rembrandt Frerichs

Here's something with a bit of crossover appeal from TRPTK; Dutch pianist Rembrandt Frerichs' latest recording was made in collaboration with the Alma Quartet, resulting in a work that combines composed parts for classical ensemble with improvised jazz piano and percussion.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC, Hi-Res+ FLAC

Louis Matute Large Ensemble

Electric guitarist Louis Matute brings his amplified sound to an otherwise totally acoustic ensemble, blending sounds from numerous folk traditions in a sextet of saxophone, trumpet, bass, piano, drums and oud.
