New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 24th March 2022

Pictured: Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad

The latest jazz recordings at Presto include the newest instalment of Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's Jazz Is Dead series, a long-lost reissue from Brazilian jazz samba player Jose Roberto Bertrami, and a double reissue of late-50s Ornette Coleman.

Genesis of Genius combines two seminal late-50s Coleman recordings, Something Else!!!!: The Music of Ornette Coleman and Tomorrow Is the Question!: The New Music of Ornette Coleman, two albums that propelled Coleman's reputation into that of one of New York's most visionary players. Particularly in the case of Something Else, Coleman's original pieces would also go on to become standards, and is also features Don Cherry on trumpet.

Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, Bill Stewart

The trio of organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart celebrate three decades of playing together - as well as their Smoke Sessions debut - on Perpetual Pendulum, having first performed at the Smoke Jazz Club as a trio back in 1989. The set features both original tunes by the trio, as well as standards by Gershwin, Wayne Shorter, and Duke Ellington among others.

Mark Turner

Titled after Polish sci-fi novelist Stanisław Lem's book of the same name, Mark Turner's latest quartet record is his first since 2014's Lathe of Heaven, Return From the Stars is a wholly original work with Turner playing alongside trumpeter Jason Palmer, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jonathan Pinson.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Harry Christelis and Pedro Velasco

Harry Christelis and Pedro Velasco are a guitar duo whose sound, rooted in jazz and folk, also explores atmospheric textures and song structures. The title "Scribbling" is a pretty apt description, with many of the duo's pieces being small, yet evocative works.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Not a totally new release but a new addition to the Presto catalogue from Polish label Fundacja Słuchaj, this recording captures pianist Cecil Taylor's second performance ever in Poland at the 1984 Jazz Jamboree Festival, accompanied by a large group of improvisers that included Tomasz Stańko, Enrico Rava, William Parker and Jimmy Lyons just to name a few.
