Jazz New Release Round-Up - 24th February 2022
The latest jazz releases include pianist/producer Robert Glasper's latest Black Radio recording featuring collaborators Killer Mike and Gregory Porter among others, Norwegian jazz veteran Harald Bergersen on Losen Records, and German singer/composer Alma Naidu's debut on Leopard Records. Courtesy of Essential and American Jazz Classics we also have reissues from John Handy, Jimmy Giuffre and the Bill Evans Trio.
Having already cemented the sounds of nu jazz with his past two 'Black Radio' series of records, pianist and producer Robert Glasper brings on a number of collaborators for its latest iteration - from hip-hop emcees like Killer Mike (Run the Jewels) and ty dolla $ign, to vocalists Gregory Porter and Jennifer Hudson.

The London-based 'semi-free jazz' duo of saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd return with the help of producer Max Luthert, who effects the duo's improvisatory music through arrays of synthesisers and tape loops to atmospheric effect, without obscuring the pair's penchant for sax-led riffs.

London-based pianist Marco Tranchina, along with his Smät Five quintet that brings together players from around Europe (including some of the top Italian players from the London scene), make their Ubuntu Music label debut with More Than Ever, written by Tranchina over the course of the pandemic.

Veteran of Norwegian jazz, saxophonist Harald Bergersen, performs in a quartet of the scene's young up-and-comers on baritone sax. The quartet play a selection of Harald's favourite standards, including Billy Strayhorn's 'Chelsea Bridge', Gerry Mulligan's 'A Ballad' and 'Blues in the Closet' by Oscar Pettiford.

Swedish pianist Johan Lindvall along with his bandmates bassist Adrian Myhr and drummer Andreas Skår Winther play a set of original tunes, exploring darker themes than their 2019 debut 'No City, No Tree, No Lake'.

German singer, composer and lyricist Alma Naidu makes her debut on Leopard Records, with the assistance of drummer/produce Wolfgang Haffner. Naidu also debuts a number of original works on Alma, which features guest appearances from Dominic Miller, Nils Landgren, and more.

English double bassist and composer Matt Ridley follows up his 2021 album The Antidote with a short 3-track EP of tunes from the same recording sessions.

An Essential Jazz Classics reissue of saxophonist John Handy's 1965 performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival (originally released in 1966), on which Handy and co. play only two songs; the 27-minute 'If Only We Knew', and the 19-minute 'Spanish Lady', plus a bonus track of the similarly lengthy 'Tears of Ole Miss (Anatomy of a Riot)'. Recorded with a quintet of then-unknown musicians - violinist Michael White, guitarist Jerry Hahn, bassist Don Thompson, and drummer Terry Clarke - Handy's Monterey Jazz Festival performance saw him at a peak of his career.

From American Jazz Classics is this Bill Evans Trio set which features the complete performances from their 1961 Village Vanguard sets (presented in chronological order), the final recordings made by Evans, Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian all together.
