New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 21st October 2021

The latest jazz releases for this week include a 1960s live set from John Coltrane, remixes of London saxophonist Nubya Garcia’s widely acclaimed debut album, and jazz reinterpretations of J.S. Bach’s ‘Two-Part Inventions’.

The recordings on A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle come from the final night of Coltrane’s week-long stint of shows that culminated in his much-remembered performance at the Penthouse in Seattle. Here, unsurprisingly, Coltrane performs with his classic quartet featured on A Love Supreme - pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones - with the additions of Pharaoh Sanders on tenor saxophone and Donald Garrett playing second bass.

Nubya Garcia

English saxophonist Nubya Garcia’s latest release is a full remix album of her acclaimed 2020 album Source - one of our most popular releases of last year - featuring a wide array of musicians reinterpreting Garcia’s tracks, including DJ Harrison of American jazz-funkers Butcher Brown, and British jazz drummer/producer Moses Boyd.

Haesen & Breidenbach

Influenced by the sounds of jazz and French chanson, vocalist Charlotte Haesen and guitarist Philip Breidenbach’s Ou est l’amour interpret these historical sounds through a modern filter, with crystal-clear production and a light touch of soul to go with it.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela

This special edition of the collaboration between Nigerian drummer and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen and South African trumpet player Hugh Masekela features eight re-imagined ‘bonus mixes’, taken from the original recording sessions the pair made, as well as a booklet with liner notes and photos.

Moisés P. Sánchez

Unsurprisingly, this release from Moisés P. Sánchez features Bach’s Two-Part Inventions, reinterpreted for jazz trio and piano. Citing Bachian principles of reworking musical idioms while retaining their essence, the original tunes remain mostly intact, sometimes adding a swinging rhythm or syncopated bass to spice things up.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Peter Materna

German saxophonist Peter Materna wrote the bulk of The Kiss during last year’s lockdown period, having suddenly found himself with a wealth of free time. Recruiting two young players in bassist Lisa Wulff and drummer Silvan Strauss, Materna and his new trio perform a set of originals that are the culmination of his thirty years on the German jazz scene.
