This week’s latest jazz releases include drummer Nate Smith’s Kinfolk 2: See the Birds, following up his 2017 record Postcards From Everywhere on Edition, Marc Ribot’s 2010 solo guitar album Silent Movies reissued for the first time on vinyl, and the bebop & swing-inspired Harvey / O’Higgins Project’s That’s the Way to Live!.

The follow-up to the American drummer’s 2017 album, Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere features a huge cast of diverse musicians, with guest spots including vibraphonist Joel Ross, violinist Regina Carter, guitarist Vernon Reid, and vocalist Brittany Howard of blues-rock band Alabama Shakes.

Per Mathisen, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Gary Novak

This electric trio of bassist Per Mathisen, pianist/keyboardist Jan Gunnar Hoff and drummer Gary Novak is centred around an extended metaphor on the fall of the Roman Empire and current events; there’s even a version of ‘Now We Are Free’ from Hans Zimmer’s ‘Gladiator’ score in there. For fans of colourful fusion with synthesisers and fretless bass noodling abound, look no further.

Peter Dahlgren

Danish trombonist Peter Dahlgren began sowing the seeds for Unicorns First back around 2019 whilst working with the Danish Radio Big Band in Copenhagen. After-practice jam sessions at a Malmö pizza restaurant gave birth to the band featuring these musicians, and it’s this same quartet that features on Unicorns First, recorded during the absence of live concerts last year.

Harvey / O’Higgins Project

This new project led by saxophonist Dave O’Higgins and pianist Graham Harvey throws it back to the bebop era, a heavy dose of swing and appreciation for the classics with half the material covered being standards including tunes written or made famous by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
