alt text here

This week’s pick of the latest jazz releases includes the Savant Records debut of saxophonist Nicole Glover, a deluxe reissue of Buena Vista Social Club’s Cuban jazz classic, and a substantial new project from composers Matt Mitchell & Kate Gentile on PI Recordings.

The Son Cubano jazz classic turns 25 this year, and to celebrate its anniversary World Circuit have issued three special editions of the album; a double-CD set including a 64-page book of liner notes and photos, a double-LP version including the same booklet in a 12” form, and a deluxe edition featuring the album on 2 CDs and 2 vinyl records, as well as a special 40-page book and art print. All of the reissued editions also include bonus tracks taken from the same recording sessions back in 1996.

Nicole Glover

For many of the tracks on her Savant Records debut, saxophonist Nicole Glover explores the sound of the chordless trio, only joined by keyboard player George Cables on four of the tracks. Glover’s original compositions, alongside those of her new bandmates Daniel Duke (bass) and Nic Cacioppo (drums), make the fullest use of this unorthodox trio format, revelling in the freedom of the sax-led jazz trio.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Jan Lundgren

Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren’s latest album was recorded live at Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival in August 2020, with French saxophonist Emile Parisien replacing his usual drummer due to travel restrictions, an unexpected turn of events that birthed an unconventional yet fruitful trio. Consisting of self-penned tunes based around catchy melodies, their performances fluid and soulful despite only having had one short rehearsal together beforehand.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Kinkajous

The sophomore record of this London quintet sees the band expanding upon the sound of their 2019 debut Hidden Lines, exploring the sounds of contemporary jazz and electronica with lush instrumentation and dynamic playing.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Omer Klein

Israel-born, Frankfurt-based pianist Omer Klein’s latest record was conceived in the spring of 2020; as such, much of the material on Personal Belongings has Klein playing solo piano, with only four of the tracks featuring his longtime collaborators Haggai Cohen-Milo (bass) and Amir Bresler (drums). Personal Belongings ends up as a complementary mixing of groovy trio pieces like ‘Shake It’ and ‘Baghdad Blues’, while the more introspective side of Klein is demonstrated with his pensive solo works.

Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist sUb_modU (aka Romeo Sandri)’s latest recording is an intriguing blend of house music with psychedelia and jazz - a project that places just as much emphasis on drum machines and synthesisers as acoustic instruments like the soprano sax and guitar, citing krautrock and ‘70s electric jazz as influences.

Available Format: CD

Matt Mitchell & Kate Gentile

This new release on PI Recordings presents an interesting concept - Snark Horse is the title of 70 one-bar compositions penned by Matt Mitchell and Kate Gentile, as well as the name of the ensemble who play the pieces. With over 270 minutes of music captured on this release and featuring a revolving cast of musicians (including Mitchell and Gentile), Snark Horse makes for an interesting listen as the various musicians expand upon these sketch-like musical nuggets.
