New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 28th May 2021

This week’s pick of recent jazz releases include an unreleased live set from saxophonist Lol Coxhill, the debut recording by New York-based pianist Roy Gallon, and the latest album from seasoned bassist Dave Holland.

Richard X Bennett

American pianist Richard X Bennett leads a trio on his latest solo recording, blazing through polyrhythmic piano grooves, funky fusion and melodic tunes. Featuring mostly Bennett originals, R X B 3 also closes out with the ‘Tum Hi Ho’ by Indian film director Mithun Sharma, a callback to Bennett’s past raga-based recordings.

Lol Coxhill

This recent Slam Productions recording is an unreleased live set from saxophonist Lol Coxhill, performing at the Gibbs Jazz Club in Cardiff, 1985. Playing both soprano and sopranino saxophones and what Coxhill described as a “mix of requests”, Coxhill ‘85 includes all the self-deprecating mid-tune banter you’d expect from a Coxhill concert. Somewhat of an outsider to the British free-improv scene, Coxhill’s performances on this record are more like solo-performed abstractions of songs, more tuneful than what you’d expect from a totally improvised set.

Available Format: CD

Ray Gallon

New York-based pianist Ray Gallon may be a mainstay in his local scene, having played with and appeared on numerous artists’ recordings, but Make Your Move is the first recording made by Gallon himself at the helm, accompanied by fellow New York jazzers David Wong on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. Save for Jermone Kern’s ‘Yesterdays’ and Victor Young’s ‘I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You’, the material on Make Your Move is Gallon’s own - steeped in rhythm and blues sounds with his killer rhythm section backing him up at every turn.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Marriage Material

Though the music of Marriage Material draws from many different sources, the core of the German quartet’s sound is fiery modern fusion music. The band’s debut recording draws favourable comparisons to Weather Report or Return to Forever, with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and organist Simon Oslender among the guest features.

B-Side Band

Czech big band the B-Side Band have been recording and performing in the city of Brno for the best part of fifteen years, with this newest release under the direction of trumpeter/bandleader Josef Buchta being a performance of Jaromír Hnilička’s ‘Missa Jazz’. Performed in collaboration with the Ars Brunensis chamber choir, the work itself is a complete Mass in every sense of the word - its original score held in the Vatican Library. An intriguing mixture of big-band brass and traditional choral mass, this marks the first recording of the work since its debut in 2008.

Dave Holland

Bassist Dave Holland is one of the oldest names in British jazz, a man who can boast having worked with Miles Davis, or Chick Corea as a member of the band Circle. For this release, he’s leading a trio with guitarist Kevin Eubanks and drummer Obed Calvaire, the pieces themselves mostly written by Holland with a handful by his bandmates. This trio sees Holland alongside two fellow jazz heavyweights, both practised composers and leaders of their own projects, with Eubanks having also played with Holland on the bassist’s 1990 ECM release Extensions.
