New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 22nd March 2019

New Jazz Releases 22nd MarchSome fun records out this week. Beach Boys-go-bebop with Atomic's latest offering, boogaloo odysseys from Oz Noy, David Laborier's latest cross-genre experiments, and the Benny Lackner Trio continue to tastefully push the envelope.

David Laborier

David Laborier is working with his sextet on this occasion, in immediately appealing pieces. A musical melting-pot of jazz, pop, rock with tastefully experimental flourishes, no one element outweighing the others, this could even tickle the fancy of non-jazz fans.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Kicking off with a take on Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds, the 14th album from Scandinavian supergroup Atomic is a very enjoyable. Highlights include their versions of Jan Garbarek’s “Karin’s Mode” and Steve Lacy’s “Art.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Oz Noy mashes up boogaloo rhythms (which was a Latin dance craze in the US in the late sixties), jazz and R'n'B on this latest release. Helping to realise Noy’s concept is a cast of musicians equally versed in the backbeat and the beyond, including drummers Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl and Steve Ferrone; bassists Will Lee, John Patitucci, and James Genus.

Available Format: CD

Benny Lackner Trio

With its unique blend of field recordings, drum loops and intricate improvisations, “Rise to the Occasion” has turned into something of a signature tune for Drake as a whole. It also perfectly summarises the recognisable electro-acoustic style of the band and its commitment to carving out the essence of their musical ideas.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Jacob Collier

And finally, teenage London based YouTube sensation Jacob Collier rocks up with his second album. His debut album made Jamie Cullum seem like Cecil Taylor in comparison, but to be fair he is just starting out and obviously has bags of talent, so let's give the kid a break and listen without prejudice.
