In the opening Mahler bars of Mahler's Symphony vast Third Symphony, recorded live in the Royal Albert Hall, one of the main credentials of this release is instantly clear: the splendour of the eight horns in unison fortissimo is the first great moment in an unfolding panoply of superlative orchestral playing...Petrenko excellently keeps the epic musical journey on a tight, but not too tight rein.

The current performance is at its competitive best in the epic first movement and in a moving account of the finale, whose only drawback is a certain amount of sonic 'glare' in the movement's great recapitulatory central climax.
