About
Composed in 1848, Hiob was Loewe’s twelfth oratorio. To understand the context of the work and Loewe’s oratorio style in general, it is important to note that Mendelssohn had died a year earlier, having already published his benchmark oratorios St Paul (1836) and Elijah (1846/47), and Loewe is likely to have been familiar with them. Telschow’s libretto for the oratorio comprised a summary of the 42 chapters of the Book of Job from the textbooks and psalms of the Old Testament. The rediscovery and reconstruction of Hiob in Bad Dürkheim in 2001 instigated this recording.

Comprehensive notes introducing Loewe and the project itself, plus a thoroughgoing synopsis, are included in German and English but there is no translation of the text. The performance is the thing, though, and it's finely done. Those who enjoy peering into the less-explored corners of this repertory may find it hiust the hiob.
