About

This varied programme centres on themes of rest, with a standout piece: Joel Thompson’s virtuosic A Prayer for Deliverance, written in 15 parts, showcasing Tenebrae’s passion and precision. The second half features Herbert Howells' Requiem, one of the most moving works in the English choral tradition, composed after the tragic death of Howells' son and published just before his own death in 1983.

Tenebrae is a London-based professional vocal ensemble. Founded in 2001 by director Nigel Short, it has developed a reputation for exceptional performances of choral music.

August 2025

This latest recording once again showcases his singers' effortless versatility both as choristers and soloists...One of Tenebrae's great strengths is to bring both dignity and panache to these works, showing restraint where it is due, but unleashing full-blooded passion at the climaxes without a trace of vulgarity.
