Their performance of Dvořák’s magical Second Piano Quintet is magnificent. The verve and sheer beauty of the string playing is immediately apparent in the glorious cello solo at the opening, but such exquisite moments never get in the way of a strong feeling for overall structure which pays huge dividends in the outer movements.

There’s Mendelssohnian feather-lightness in the outer sections of the Scherzo, while the central Poco tranquillo Trio section is another example of breathtaking raptness...With recorded sound that’s at once detailed and atmospheric, this new Hyperion release is pure pleasure in every respect.

The premiere recording [of the Price] was released by the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective only four years ago, but this new one, by the chamber-music dream team of the Takács Quartet and pianist Marc-André Hamelin, offers a different slant, placing the work more firmly in the classical tradition of the Dvořák with which it is paired...The two approaches are complementary, equally worthwhile, yet if anything the Quintet as a whole sounds less self-conscious as the Takács and Hamelin have it.
