About
Dresden-based composer and producer Sven Helbig creates Requiem A to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, honoring the victims of war and sending a profound plea for peace. The world premiere will take place on February 9, 2025, in Dresden’s Kreuzkirche, performed by the Dresden Kreuzchor, the Saxon State Orchestra, and celebrated bass-baritone René Pape. Though less ambitious than some contemporary requiems, the nine movements believed by some to be a spiritual number build in emotional heft; conductor Martin Lehmann harnesses Helbig's sprawling forces in the extended Sanctus; the whispered, pleading calls of the singers against the military snare has a foreshadowing effect, which realises its potential in the grieving 'To the willow'.
