About

With this third release, the recording of all orchestral works by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, composed during her relatively short life, is completed. Once again, the WDR Symphony Orchestra under Łukasz Borowicz presents a representative spectrum, ranging from the neoclassical early works of this phenomenal artist to her later phase, where tonal innovations took center stage without losing essential communication with the audience. This album includes the world premiere recording of the composer's first symphony, as well as other concert hall rarities such as the early Polish Overture and the late In una parte, a final "sonoristic" masterpiece created in 1967, two years before her death.

Symphony No. 1, written during World War Two. Conceived in classic four-movement structure, it gets off to a moody start before picking up rhythmic drive. The whole work sounds arresting thanks to excellent playing from the Cologne orchestra under a devoted champion of much Polish music, Łukasz Borowicz, who also supplies his own programme notes.
